French Guiana

On a Holland America Line South America cruise, explore Devil’s Island, the notorious penal colony off the coast of French Guiana. Established in 1852, Devil’s Island was renowned for its hellish conditions and for several famous inmates. Wrongfully convicted of spying, Captain Alfred Dreyfus was exonerated after nearly five years there. Henri Charriere recounted the story of his successful escape in autobiography Papillon. Today, guests can visit the remains of the prison, as well as the Guiana Space Center and tourist facilities.
